OMG! LOOK WHO'S RUNNING TO THE RING!

For Rick's character design blog--the assignment was a wrestler. Mine is a cross between a sumo wrestler and a pro-wrestler:

Tight pencils (in my less often seen anal-retentive style) with the usual Photoshop colors. I was afraid this was going to be another bland one, but I ended up being happy with how it turned out. Or maybe I just like the color blue? The pose is a little static (he's supposed to be poised to make a powerful sumo palm-strike) and the hands are a bit clunky, but I think I did a decent job with giving a sense of this dude's volume.

Actually, I didn't find the pose all THAT static. Static doesn't mean necessarily that a drawing isn't moving through space. If it did, then ALL drawings are inately static. Blahblah I think you know where I'm going with this: The Pose/stance implies some trepidation/anticipation of a move and therefore has, at least on some psychological level, something dynamic and kinetic about it. Also, the rather rotund belly serves as a focal point, the weight of which is expressed well. From there you have sinews/muscles and lines drawn out from it, giving the character a small bit of movement, as well.

Anyways, this is all basic stuff. I still strongly urge a life drawing class or at least some rather extensive flippings through da Vinci sketchbooks (there's tons nowadays). If all else fails, then might I highly suggest heavy peepings at a strip club?

(I got yer back!)

Oh, and I, too, like the color blues so this appeals to me quite a bit.

Odelay, J. Ho!

I was surfing the Blogger for wrestling related stuff and found this. Very good. Are you a professional artist? I like your stuff. I think I may be stopping by from time to time. You should do tats!

lord shen: thanks man, i know what you mean about energy in a pic not necessarily being related to movement, but i still feel that there's not quite enough coiled tension in this pic, you know? as for e.honda, i don't think any self respecting nerd could draw a sumo guy without at least being aware of the street fighter comparisons that would arise. i'm surprised you didn't mention yokozuna from wwf too! LOL... and yes, we should go do "life drawing" at a gentleman's club. O_O

diablo pelirrojo: woah, cool! thanks for stopping by! i hope you find some more time to post on your blog--you should post a pic of yourself in full lucha regalia so that i can draw a pic!
